Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre
The Tiong Bahru Freshmarket and Foodcourt, commissioned by the National Environment Agency of Singapore, is a new generation development nestled in the heritage part of the city. Great care is taken to ensure the design is contextual and sympathetic to the surrounding neighbourhood. CPG’s in-house transportation engineers carried out additional studies to solve the existing traffic flow and ease the impact of new vehicular circulation due to the attendant servicing, loading and pick-up points of the new building.

The Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre is a 2-storey building with a large central garden courtyard on a triangulated site. The Freshmarket, located on the 1st storey, consists of 255 provision shops and wet produce stalls. The provision shops lining the peripheries help to enclose the morning wet produce market from the main road and generate night life to the building as they close late. Additional functions such as Common freezer room, Admin office and public toilets are designed with tenants and patrons in mind. Setbacks are introduced between structures and stalls to retain the traditional 5-footway.

The 2nd storey Foodcourt consists of a line of 85 food stalls surrounding pockets of eating spaces, with a seating capacity of 1,050. There is an urban park and garden as well as carparking facilities at the roof deck. All floors are handicapped accessible. The focus is the landscaped courtyard garden that helps to bring in light, ventilation and visual relief. Surrounding it is a deck for open alfresco dining. Access is via escalators, lifts and staircases.
