Technical Review of Sewer Network in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi government and the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority have embarked on a long term program for the privatisation of the water and electricity sector. Furthermore, Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company, which is responsible for the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater in the Emirates, as well as the bulk delivery of treated effluent for irrigation was privatised as part of this exercise. The company owned and operated the Abu Dhabi and Al Ain wastewater collection networks, Mafraq and Zakher sewage treatment plants, and a number of small sewage treatment plants servicing villages in remote areas.

CPG Consultants, in partnership with Cardno International, Dewey Ballantine and BNP Paribas, carried out a network review, including a review of the master plan and the sewage treatment plant. The plant is situated in the Zakher District, approximately 25km from the centre of Al Ain, and treats sewage from the city and a number of peripheral communities.

A technical review of the network was conducted and due diligence carried out on the Zakher plant as part of the privatisation consultancy services. The scope included the assessment of the performance plant, network and pumping stations; review of the operation and maintenance procedures; review of the plant organisation; check on the environmental compliance; comparison of the plant performance with typical performance, and development of KPIs.
