CPG In The News - TODAY - National Day Special

TODAY Newspaper interviewed Lee Soo Khoong, Executive Vice President (Architecture) of CPG Consultants, about his work in the adaptation and preservation of the Old Hill Street Police Station. He shared with the reporter that a historical building deteriorates faster when it is not in use and it becomes less meaningful to keep and preserve it. Adaptive reuse preserves such buildings and protects them for future generations.

While Singapore’s colonial past makes up the country’s heritage and history, modern buildings also play a part in shaping its identity. TODAY also conducted an interview with Colin Wu, Senior Vice President (Architecture) of CPG Consultants about one such development, Gardens by the Bay, which has become an icon for both residents and tourists, transforming the skyline around the Marina Bay area.

The Old Hill Street Police Station, now home to the Ministry of Communications and Information, and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, is most recognizable for its coloured timbre windows and was gazette as a national monument in 1998.

Gardens by the Bay which opened in 2012, is part of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s aim to create a “city in a garden”. With a great expansive water front, it showcases the best of tropical horticulture and garden artistry. Vibrant programming is integrated for the gardens to host a wide range of international and national events.

CPG Consultants rendered design consultancy services for both developments.

CPG In The News - ST Life! - Going for Gold

ST Life! reported about one of CPG Consultants’ projects, the National Gallery Singapore, which comprises the former Supreme Court and City Hall, two of Singapore’s most iconic buildings fronting the Padang. It will house 19th and 20th century Singapore and Southeast Asian art in November next year.

The rich heritage behind the gallery is why the approach towards the design and construction of the development has to be subtle and delicate. Undertaken by CPG Consultants and Studio Milou, the project, is slated for completion in 2015.

The National Gallery Singapore, with a gross floor area of 60,000m2, will be comparable in size with some of Europe’s most well known museums, such as the Museo Nacional Del Prado in Madrid and the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, France. The design elegantly integrates the former Supreme Court and City Hall at the roof level through the use of a linear draped canopy supported by tree-like columns, unifying the two buildings to create an iconic edifice, easily recognisable to all. Offering numerous public activities at the roof-top as well as in the new basement area, the gallery is slated to become a new cultural destination for all Singapore residents and art lovers worldwide.
