Simei Care Centre is a psychiatric rehabilitation centre run by a charity organisation. It is 9 storeys high and houses 120 beds from the 5th storey onwards. The lower four floors are administrative, training, communal and therapy facilities which supports the residents, as well as 150 day care members.
To maximise use of space, this building is conceptualised as having two ground spaces; a tropical atrium on the ground floor and a roof garden on the 4th storey. The tropical atrium acts as the formal entrance while the 4th storey is the recreation, therapy and communal area, where the residents and day care members gather.
The design intention is to create livable and sustainable modern tropical spaces.
Almost the whole building can be naturally ventilated even though a few rooms are fitted with air-conditioning. The building is kept thin for cross ventilation, the use of louvre windows maximises ventilation, and where walls are not needed, it is fully opened to improve air-flow and openness.
The skylight at the tropical atrium lights up the central space during the day so no artificial lighting is required. Natural light makes the tropical atrium feel alive. The environment is bright, pleasant, and even windy at times.
Externally, use of deep overhangs and sun-shades keeps the building face shaded even in late afternoon. This results in a cool environment throughout the day. The fins also give a very strong modern tropical character to the building. Detailing is kept very neat and simple.
Simei Care Centre was conferred the Singapore Institute of Architects, Honourable Mention for Healthcare Buildings in 2006.
