A national project of international acclaim, the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is developed to marry the best of European theatre design and technology with the tranquil spaces unique to South East Asian architecture. Occupying 6-ha of prime waterfront land by the Marina Bay, the Esplanade is equipped with a 1,800-seat concert hall, a 2,000-seat theatre, rehearsal studios and retail and F&B outlets amongst others.
The classical rectangular-shaped concert hall features reverberation chambers, complemented by an adjustable acoustic canopy and acoustic curtains to suit different genres of performances. Designed to suit both Asian and Western performing arts, the theatre boasts elaborate lighting and stage management systems and an adjustable proscenium and orchestra pit, displaying its capability for large-scale musicals and traditional performances. The drama, recital and dance rehearsal studios cater to performing groups of smaller sizes, while an open-air amphitheatre in the midst of a landscaped garden is suited for informal performances for up to 300 people. Another key feature of the Esplanade is the cladding that envelops the two halls. The careful considerations to aluminium sunshades orientation and glass specification allows maximum transparency between the interior and the exterior while reducing solar buildup. Having received rave reviews during its opening, the Esplanade is now an architectural icon of Singapore.
