CPG Consultants was appointed by Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority to provide full design consultancy services for the new Islamabad International Airport’s Passenger Terminal Building. The new airport, to be renamed Benazir Bhutto International Airport, currently in detailed design stage, is Pakistan’s first green field civil aerodrome, and marks a new era in the development of world-class aviation facilities in the country.
CPG Consultants will employ environmentally sustainable design strategies such as daylighting and sun shading, to reduce the energy usage of the building, as part of a design approach that is proposing an expansive intelligent main-roof and elongated elevated-driveway-length front portal, as a technologically advanced and multi-layered interpretation of traditional Islamic geometric patterns.
The decision to co-locate the International and Domestic halls provides the opportunity for the striking statement of the main roof form. The Main Roof is a simple trapezoidal plane resulting from the angle between two of the piers along the Landside/Airside line. Its outermost edge is defined by an expansive mesh screen cantilever to the length of the elevated driveway kerbside and well-wishers plaza frontage, while its sides, triangulated trellis frames, that fold down to touch angled rows of columns, just short of the ground. It is thereby the architectural enclosure that expresses the idea of tradition meeting modernity through Islamic inspired geometric patterning more representative of Pakistan.
The Terminal Building has a modular design comprising the co-located International and Domestic halls, with a linear pier on either side - and centre pier extending out from this, to serve the aircraft boarding gates. The planning allows for a design capacity of up to 9 million passengers per annum, before the extension of each side, to accommodate future traffic growth.
The new Airport Terminal will be a state-of-the-art facility offering the latest in passenger comfort and convenience, with an airport plaza included on the landside to cater to the high ratio of visitors accompanying the passengers.
