CPG Consultants Pte Ltd (CPG) has been engaged by Taisei Corporation and their joint-venture partners Kumagai-Gama-Nurol (a consortium of Turkish and Japanese companies) to lead the design of the US$1 billion Marmaray Railway Bosphorus Tube Crossing project in Istanbul, Turkey. Prior to the appointment, CPG had assisted the consortium in securing the project through competition.
The project involves the design and construction of a 13.6-km railway tunnel under the Bosphorus Straits together with four underground railway stations - three on the European side and one on the Asian side. In addition, a major bridge interchange will be built on the Asian side to facilitate vehicular traffic flow. The Bosphorus Straits joins the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea, and separates the continents of Europe and Asia.
Reputed to be one of the world's deepest underwater railway tunnels, this is CPG's maiden project in Europe. The deepest point of the earthquake-proof tunnel will be about 55m below sea level, with the deepest station being about 50m underground.
The Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan terms the prestigious Marmaray Project as "...the project of the century". When completed in 2009, it will not only be one of the world's deepest immersed tunnels, but also the only underwater railway crossing that links Europe and Asia.
