Water Quality Modelling for Van Giang Urban Development, Vietnam

CPG Consultants partnered with Cardno International, Australia, to provide water quality modelling services for the Van Giang Urban Development. The development is located to the south-east of Hanoi, across the Red River. The project site is surrounded by about 2,500 ha of paddy fields at its south and east, and separated from Bac Hung Hai River at its north by a 7.75m high dyke system. The development consists of an extensive network of canals and water ways.

Water quality modelling was carried out to maintain the water quality of the waterways. A catchment water quality model was developed using MUSIC. It was carried out to generate the time series of nutrient loading, which were used as input variables to the MIKE 11 water quality hydrodynamic model.

The MUSIC modelling was also applied to identify the appropriate Water Sensitive Urban Design for reducing the nutrient loadings into the waterways, with the objective of achieving a desirable water quality standard to prevent algal blooms.
